Gold
- Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (from the Latin Aurum) and atomic number 79, chosen by Berzelius, a Swedish scientist considered one of the founders of modern chemistry. It is a precious and noble metal colored yellow and is appreciated for its strong sun-like brilliance.
Alloy
- In jewelry, pure 24-carat gold is not used because of its flexibility and the fact that it is not strong enough to be carved, but often 18-carat gold. It is therefore alloyed with other metals to make it harder. In this case, the gold alloy formed can produce several shades depending on the fixed quantities of silver, copper or palladium.
- This is why, in addition to yellow gold, there is white gold and even rose gold.
- Yellow gold is generally made up of 75% pure gold, 12.5% silver and 12.5% copper.
- Rose gold is normally made of 75% pure gold, 20% copper and 5% silver
- White gold generally consists of 75% pure gold, 15% palladium and 10% silver .
-
In France and Europe, nickel, which was once a component of its composition, is prohibited due to allergies. Without nickel, white gold is always more expensive.
